Welcome to our Website! Our school in the Northeast Bronx is a dynamic, friendly place where students love to learn and are exceeding the borough's and city's test scores.
Message from Mr. Richard Burke, our Executive Director:
We have completed a rich and rewarding academic year, a great beginning for our school’s second 5-year charter. Even as the country and our families face great hardship, our school is a center of positive influence in the lives of our children.
Some of the year’s highlights:
- We celebrated the election of the first African-American President, Barack Obama, and continued that excitement with a full month of studying the great achievements of African Americans throughout history.
- We were visited by Russell Goings, the first African American to own a seat on the New York Stock Exchange, as well as a founder of Essence Magazine and Black Enterprise Corporation. He visited classrooms, read to our 5th Graders from his epic poem, The Children of Children Keep Coming, and talked about how important it is for children to “own their education.”
- On the technology front, we have added more classroom computers and SMART Boards, set up a laptop cart for Grades 3-5, and gave weekly technical training to teachers on how to make the most of SMART Board technology.
- Our Library has been transformed into a vital center of learning and, with the addition of 700 new titles, our collection has grown well beyond what we had in the past.
- Our participation in a grant that provides Korean language instruction in Kindergarten has resulted in extensive coverage by the news media.
- The Chess in the Schools program led to our first out-of-school tournaments, where many of our children competed in city-wide competitions.
- School field trips took us to many places, including Lincoln Center, Hofstra University, the New York Hall of Science, the Bronx Zoo, the Native American Museum, a working farm, and Schomburg Center of African American Heritage.
- Our children continued their strong performance on NY State tests.
- We received over 1100 applications for 45 spots that will open in our school next year – just another sign of our tremendous accomplishments.
Each day I am amazed by the brilliance of our children, the dedication and talents of our staff, and the strong support of old friends and new friends alike.
Our dream to expand this successful model of education continues as we build on our past and plan for the future.
